The Car Ride Home
Have you ever asked your child, “How was school” and they reply with that dreaded one word answer of “fine.” And then you ask, “What did you learn” and they say “nothing” (I know you know what I am talking about LOL).
Well, I don’t want the car ride home from Jiu Jitsu to sound like that, so here are some tips on what you can ask your child so you get more then just a 1 word answer. These tips will help your communication with your child about their training and help to strengthen your bond.
Ninja Tip #1:
Ask them what the Code of the Week was! Each week we focus on a different Code on our Code of 26. These Codes teach Life Skills that every polite ninja must work hard towards becoming. From honesty, to self confidence, to integrity, to perseverance. Our Instructors provide a simplified explanation of each as well as situations that your child might find themselves in where they need to demonstrate these skills. Ask them what code they learned and discuss it with your child.
Ninja Tip #2:
Ask that what Manner they learned! Each week we also focus on a different Manner of the week, because we know that a well mannered ninja is much easier to take places then a non mannered ninja. These Manners are more than likely things you are already teaching at home, but we are going to help reinforce.
Ninja Tip #3:
Ask what Technique they learned! Each class they will learn a new technique (with the exception of drilling week and testing week, the 3rd and 4th week respectively). Ask them the name of the technique and see if they can walk you through it step by step. Take it one step further and ask them to perform the move on you (just make sure you know how to TAPOUT LOL).
Asking these specific questions, instead of just “How was class” will get more specific answers and allow for a deeper and meaningful conversation.
Give it a shot this week,
